Anxiety. The bad word that roams around a college campus like it’s the latest trend. We joke about it, we do our best to overcome it, but do we ever really sit down and talk about it? Between classes and social lives, college is a hotbed for anxiety build-up. I know personally I have had to give myself mental health days when I feel overwhelmed or anxious. One thing I think we need to remember is that feeling anxious is totally normal and it’s nothing to be ashamed of embarrassed about! Easier said than done of course but being open and talking about what’s on your mind can really help ease whatever negative thoughts you might have. I have personally been dealing with this issue for quite some time now and I have compiled a list of things I usually do when I am feeling anxious. Hopefully these minor techniques give you some insight and maybe even some inspiration on how to deal with these rainy days. (DISCLAIMER: There are just my personal ideas on how I deal with minor stress and minor anxiety and I am not by any means a professional or licensed councilor. Always consult with a professional before trying any radical coping mechanisms.)
Write things down
I will admit, this is an idea stolen from my mom. Growing up I never wanted to listen to her (what moody teenager does???). However, when I started to feel the pressures of the outside world, I looked to her for solace and good advice. She gave me the great idea of writing down everything that I am worrying about in list form on a piece of paper. By writing my worries down, I am making these ideas and feelings into an actual word that I can look at and ultimately gain control over. I’ll admit, once I start writing down these words and worries, they start to seem so small and unreal. As I continue to write, I usually look back and what I first write and I think to myself, “why was I even worried about that?”. Writing everything down really helps me gather all of the running thoughts in my head and once they are out of my head and on paper, I am able to make sense of them and discard the small worries that I have no reason to be worried about.
Step away from it
This step usually pertains to homework for me. Whenever I have a huge project or and long paper I need to write, I get the normal feeling of anxiety that falls over students. I go over every detail and ask myself if it is up to standards for my class. Most of the time when this happens I get a bit worked up and have to step away from what I am doing. I’ll leave the room I am in and go do something to take my mind off of the stress on my assignment. This activity usually involves a snack and a quick cuddle session with my adorable puppy!
Take a walk
I always find that when I feel stressed, any sort of physical activity has a very positive impact on my mood. I get my blood pumping and I start to feel good that I’m finally working out for once! Working out and getting active is a good way to release frustration. I’m not much of a runner but talking my dog for a walk around the block a few times is a great substitute!
Talking about stress and anxiety is not an easy thing to do. It is a normal thing to feel and it should be something everyone can talk about openly! Always remember, it’s okay to not be okay! Talk to someone! Always take care of yourself first!
